We live an incredible dream...

Jerry with Buddy and Maggie

Sometimes I hear colleagues complaining about how tough this business is. Yes, we all have a bad day now and then. My cure for a tough day is to take a walk through the fields. In just minutes, I am ALWAYS refreshed and energized.

We all have friends who have “professional jobs”—like lawyers who believe they have “clients,” but we have “Customers.” These “professionals” say they envy us because we get to work outdoors and enjoy fresh air while making a living. I want my attorney to spend a 10-hour day in the field when the temperature is 96 degrees, there is not a cloud in the sky, the humidity is 92%, the gnats are dive bombing, and not a wisp of air is moving.

I often think that our work is like the saying:

a bad day of fishing is better than a good day in the office.

We live the bad dream while others can only dream. We should be enormously grateful and honored to be chosen for this work. I often say I would rather be fly fishing, but given the choice, I usually find myself at the farm.

What’s my point? When has any phase of the horticultural industry been out of fashion? Our future is unbelievably secure and will be full of rewarding experiences.

Have a great year.

Jerry
